Wendy M in North Central New Mexico
We are two older women running a small, all-natural dryland farm in New Mexico. We raise rare and endangered breeds of heritage turkeys, chickens, geese, guinea fowl, exotic pheasants, peafowl and rare pigeons. We also raise about 500 varieties of iris and lots of uncommon nursery stock.
With the cost of feed skyrocketing, we are having a very difficult time maintaining the birds. Every scrap of our revenue from sales and feather crafts currently goes to feed. We can no longer maintain our buildings or equipment and they are deteriorating with no hope of repair. We are also trying to start raising as many of our grain and forage crops as possible for the birds, but this requires a capital outlay for fencing, seed, infrastructure for watering, etc.
We can send you our newsletter (Pico del Gallina) or, for larger donations, even a Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas goose or the like, or feather crafts. We can even name a bird after you or a friend, or occasionally name a new variety of iris for you.
Please consider sponsoring our little farm! Small farms maintain biodiversity and raise really healthy food, yet they are constantly threatened by the huge conglomerates and their agents. The big guys receive millions of dollars in subsidies; we sure don’t!
If you cannot sponsor us, please consider helping out a small farm near you or even spending more at local farmer’s markets. It all helps!
Thank you for reading! We hope to hear from you soon. -Wendy M.
